Spring is Here - Get Started on Your Roof Coating Project

Flat roof waterproofed with Ames Waterproof Coatings

Spring has a way of revealing everything winter tried to hide.

The snow melts. The puddles linger. The sun sticks around longer. And suddenly that roof you have not thought about in months starts whispering reminders. Small cracks. Weathered seams. Ponding water. Tiny entry points just waiting for the next heavy rain.

Spring is not just a season. It is protection season. It is inspection season. It is build season.

And there is no better time to get started on your roof coating project.

Let’s talk about how to do it right.

Step One: Start with the Right Basecoat

Every high performing roof coating system begins with a strong foundation. The basecoat is what bonds to the substrate and creates the waterproof membrane that everything else builds on.

Blue Max® Liquid Rubber

Blue Max® is our most well-known and trusted waterproofing membrane. Used across the world and in countless applications.

Easily applied with brush, roller, or spayer, Blue Max® rolls on smoothly and cures into a seamless, flexible membrane that blocks out water. Foundations, roofs, basements, walls…if it needs waterproofing, Blue Max® has likely been used on it.

For roofing applications, Blue Max® is paired with a UV-stable topcoat such as Maximum-Stretch or Ames Premium Roof Armor. While Blue Max® forms the waterproof barrier, the topcoat protects that barrier from long-term UV exposure.

That base and topcoat partnership is where durability really shines.

Elasto-Barrier®

Elasto-Barrier® is a liquid rubber elastomeric waterproofing basecoat designed to form a seamless membrane over your roof surface. It adheres to a wide range of substrates (including modified bitumen, tar & gravel, rolled roofing, and BUR) and moves with the roof as temperatures shift.

Roofs expand in the heat. They contract in the cold. A rigid coating can crack under that stress. An elastomeric basecoat like Elasto-Barrier® flexes instead of fracturing. That 1200% flexibility is what helps prevent water intrusion over time.

For even more strength and protection, put Ames Contouring Roof Fabric between your 1st and 2nd coats of Elasto-Barrier®.

Step Two: Lock It In with a High Performance Topcoat

Every high performing roof coating system begins with a strong foundation. The basecoat is what bonds to the substrate and creates the waterproof membrane that everything else builds on.

Ames Premium Roof Armor

Ames Premium Roof Armor® is a high performance reflective topcoat engineered to provide long term protection and durability. The acrylic coating adds UV stability to the system and helps protect the underlying basecoat from degradation caused by prolonged sun exposure. Let’s take a look at the numbers…..

Maximum-Stretch®

Maximum-Stretch® lives up to its name. Designed as a flexible, UV-stable topcoat, it moves with the roof surface while providing durable protection against weather exposure. And it comes in a wide variety of colors, so you have flexibility with your finish.

Roofs do not sit still. Wind uplift, temperature swings, and structural movement all introduce motion. Maximum-Stretch® accommodates that movement while maintaining surface integrity.

When paired with basecoats like Blue Max® or Elasto-Barrier®, it completes a system designed to seal, protect, and endure.

Not Sure What Your Roof Needs? Use the Roof Coating Guide.

A chart comparing

One of the most common questions we hear is simple:

“What product do I use for my roof?”

The answer depends on the substrate.

Metal roofs behave differently than EPDM. Built up roofing systems respond differently than concrete. Each surface has its own adhesion requirements and movement patterns.

That is exactly why we created our Roof Coating Guide.

The guide walks you through:

• Understanding surface compatibility
• Selecting the correct basecoat
• Pairing it with the right UV-stable topcoat

It’ll help you narrow down the best system quickly and confidently.
